5 Outdoor Survival Questions To Ask Before Your Next Overnight Hiking Trip

There are more than 5 important outdoor survival skills to know and apply. That goes without saying considering the many outdoor-related shows on TV and the selection of videos available through You Tube to help people in surviving the wilderness.

While all of these presentations help, it is in answering these specific 5 questions that will make or break your preparation and prevention for your next adventure.

Therefore, can you answer yes to each of these questions? And is your answer a resounding yes! More important, can you prove you know and can apply the answers.

Remember it is one thing to learn about wilderness and outdoor survival skills; it is yet another to be conversant and practiced in the skills.

1) Can you construct a shelter in less than 60 minutes with minimum effort to converse energy “for your seasonal activity?” It is a question of balancing shelter versus effort needed. Then consider the equipment you have available linked with the surroundings from which you can draw additional resources.

2) How do you stay found along your trip if assistance is needed? Unless it is dangerous where you are, stay put, stay found! When you read the stories of people who are lost and they keep moving only to experience worse conditions, it makes sense to learn the importance of staying found. Then build a base of operations around you, knowing help will arrive because your family and friends will start a call out when you don’t report in.

3) What is the best signalling device for the location in which you are travelling should you need help immediately? The old stand by is blowing your whistle. However, what if you need to signal an aircraft? Of the various devices available take some time to learn which one or two would work best for your next adventure. Remember not all days are sunny, and help can arrive at night.

4) Can you start a fire in 30 minutes or less for the conditions you will encounter along your trip? It seems, quickly lightening a fire is a rare skill. It is amusing what people will try, when around them is everything they need to start a fire. And there are some neat and nifty supplies available in your home that can be packaged and brought along like cotton balls, petroleum jelly and lint.

5) In what ways can you obtain clean water along your trip? Read survival books and copy examples of collection techniques matched by your upcoming locations. And don’t underestimate the critical contribution of water to your well-being on the trip. You will need to replenish your water loss to keep your body and mind alert to what is happening in you and around you.

As brightly colored leaves dazzle the fall landscape, hikers and hunters nationwide will migrate to mountains, woods and fields, but many, unfortunately, are ill prepared for the beating their feet will take. Hunters and hikers will often navigate the toughest terrain. Hikers, hunters and others who love the outdoors often don’t realize how strenuous it can be to withstand constant, vigorous walking on uneven terrain.

Walking up and down sharp hillsides and roaming through wet, slick fields and wooded areas places tension on the muscles and tendons in the feet and ankles, particularly if you haven’t conditioned decently before arriving at the trail. The best gear for walking up and down in the woods is a high caliber pair of well manufactured hiking boots. This investment in good boots will prevent sprained ankles or strained Achilles tendons.

It is wise for hikers and hunters to make the investment in top-grade hiking boots. Strong, well insulated and moisture-proof boots with steel or graphite shanks provide terrific ankle and foot support that facilitates lessening stress and muscle tiredness to keep down injury risk.

In damp and nippy weather, putting on appropriate socks can help avoid blisters, fungal infections and frostbite. A good synthetic sock for the first layer keeps the feet dry and cuts down blister-causing friction. For the second layer, wool socks provide warmth, take in moisture away from the skin, and help make the hiking boot comfier. Wool allows moisture to evaporate more promptly than cotton, so fewer blisters arise.

How should you act if your feet or ankles start to suffer on a hike or hunt? Pain typically happens because of overuse, being out of shape, or even from simply walking. If you’re not habituated to walking on inclined or broken ground, your legs and feet will get fatigued and cause muscles and tendons to hurt. To avert a critical injury, such as a serious sprain to the ankle or an Achilles tendon rupture, take a breather for for a while if you begin to hurt.

Moderation is also a good method to follow when first starting out in the woods. Compare hiking to skiing in that beginners should take on less difficult trails until they become better conditioned and more confident. Using common sense in starting easy will make your hunt more comfortable and enjoyable.

Many people don’t understand why it is good to own a few camping chairs. They might think that the chairs they have at home will do just the same.

Well, there are quite a few reasons for choosing camping chairs over the normal kind of chairs that you would buy to use inside your house.

Lets start with the most important reason first. This is of course a reason that has to do with the camping itself. For campers, there are two things that are important when choosing gear; weight and size. Camping chairs are made for this.

One of the worst things you can do when you go camping is to bring one of you normal in-house chairs. They are usually way too big and weight way too much. Camping chairs are in most cases a lot better suited for the job. After all, this is what they were built to do.

The most important feature of a camping chair is without a doubt that it is folding. Some of them are so well made that they can be folded into unbelievable small sizes.

To us, it is very nice that we can get camping chairs in a bunch of different designs and sizes. You can find a camping chair for just about whatever need you have. There are some extreme alternatives, like the camping stool that is meant for long hikes in hard terrain, and there are some luxurious alternatives for the ones who just want to relax in the camp all day.

But camping chairs is not limited in use to camping trips. You can use them for a lot of different activities. One example that comes to mind is the classic problem that occurs when you have too few chairs at a party you are throwing. If you have a few camping chairs lying in the garage, the problem is solved.

There are a whole bunch of other situations that you will find it useful to have camping chairs. Remember that they are just like normal chairs, they just take less space.
